Deal permanently closes dormant oil wells in national monument

The U.S. Bureau of Land Management agreed to ensure that the wells in the Caliente Mountains at the western boundary of the monument are abandoned and reclaimed properly.

A settlement agreement announced Monday between conservation groups and the U.S. Bureau of Land Management will permanently close and restore 11 long dormant oil wells in the Carrizo Plain National Monument in San Luis Obispo County.

E & B Natural Resources, an oil and gas company operating the wells, agreed to plug and abandon them.
