Ukiah church wins reversal of fines and contempt order

“I’m not sure why the court did not award us costs, but we’ll take the win,” wrote Robert Tyler of Tyler & Bursch LLP, who represented the church. The Calvary Chapel was one of the first California churches to fight Gov. Gavin Newsom’s and the county’s orders on halting religious services as ways to stop the spread of COVID.

Two years after Santa Clara County began fining the Calvary Chapel in Ukiah for defying COVID-related orders to stop holding in-person services, maintain social distancing and wear masks, an appellate panel declared that all fines and contempt of court charges against the church and two senior pastors be reversed.
