Newsom names new leader of state civil rights department

Jamie L. Crook’s appointment elevates her from deputy director of dispute resolution, a post she had held since February, and fills a vacancy that occurred amid allegations of interference by the governor in department investigations.

Longtime civil rights attorney Jamie L. Crook was appointed chief counsel for the state Civil Rights Department by Gov. Gavin Newsom on Thursday, signaling a prioritization of civil rights by the administration to Department Director Kevin Kish.
