Mediator left, no hope to settle, say GM engine suit litigants
“I’m an eternal optimist despite the apparent difficulties for a potential new magistrate judge to go through about 900 teleconferences,” U.S. District Judge Edward Chen told the parties. “It often looks very grim, until the point where it doesn’t. Talk to your clients and if you think there’s a glimmer, I could find somebody.”




The parties informed a judge Friday that settlement negotiations had broken down in a class action against General Motors LLC that alleges defective engines.
Filed in 2016, the complaint claims that GM designed and produced a defunct engine that consumed excessive amounts of oil, forcing the plaintiffs to incur high repair costs.
