Clearing of camp on Oakland street can start, US judge ruled

Caltrans said the encampment is a threat to public safety as fires frequently break out in the area. Twelve fires have occurred near the camp in the past month.

The California Department of Transportation can begin to clear more than 200 people from one of the Bay Area’s most populated homeless encampments on an Oakland city street, U.S. District Judge William H. Orrick ruled on Friday.

“I don’t have the authority, because there is no constitutional right to housing, to allow [those encamped on] Wood Street to remain on the property,” said the San Francisco-based federal judge.
