Bill to extend remote civil hearings killed by author

SB 848 would have allowed courts to conduct remote civil proceedings until Jan. 1, 2026. The current rules expire on July 1, 2023. But amendments added by the Assembly Appropriations Committee would bar the use of these proceedings in juvenile justice and commitment proceedings.

State Sen. Tom Umberg successfully urged his colleagues to vote down his bill to extend remote court access on Tuesday after it was amended “for reasons that are inexplicable.”
