CARE Act to address mentally ill passes Legislature
“This bill also comes with real accountability for local governments that don’t comply with court-ordered treatment plans,” Gov. Gavin Newsom warned. “The CARE Act also holds individuals needing care accountable to engage in treatment, with self-direction supported and civil rights protected.”




A bill to implement Gov. Gavin Newsom’s CARE Act, granting judges authority to detain people and order them into mental health programs, was approved Wednesday by the California Legislature.
Following the announcement, Newsom praised Senate Bill 1338, containing new language that builds a framework around the Community Assistance Recovery and Empowering Court.
