Legislature's climate bills are likely headed to court

Amid a heat wave and threatened power outages, the Legislature approved new emissions targets and limits on oil and gas drilling. The centerpiece of the climate legislation is AB 1279. Known as the California Climate Crisis Act, it calls on the state to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to 85% below 1990 levels — and achieve net zero emissions overall — by 2045.

California lawmakers sent a wave of new bills on climate change and other topics to the federal courts on Wednesday. Of course, each of those measures will stop by Gov. Gavin Newsom’s office first. But for several, legal challenges are likely if the governor signs them.
