Environmental group seeks court definition of ‘idle oil well’

Earthjustice had contended the wells were idle and nonproductive and emit fumes harmful to nearby residents. It sought to force the fired department to seal them. But the group’s attorney, Byron J. Chan, conceded in a phone interview Thursday that perhaps only one of the five wells identified in the complaint is not functioning.

The definition of idle oil wells will be the focus of further discussion in a Los Angeles Superior Court after a judge dismissed a lawsuit by a nonprofit organization against the city’s Fire Department because it declined to seal oil wells.
