It’s OK for judges to coach teams with attorneys’ kids, ethics panel says

The formal opinion, now part of the Code of Judicial Ethics and the California Code of Civil Procedure, says judges “are encouraged to be active in their communities and coaching a youth sports team is a rewarding way to do so.”

Trial judges who volunteer as youth sports coaches need not disqualify themselves when an attorney with a child on the judge’s team appears in court, the Supreme Court Committee on Judicial Ethics Opinions announced Friday.
