Mail to San Mateo jail not confidential, attorneys say

The three attorneys — Curtis L. Briggs of San Francisco, Robert Canny of Burlingame and Matthew Murrillo of Redlands — allege that the county’s implementation of the “smart communications system” in 2021 allows the employees to electronically scan mail sent to inmates as opposed to handing them the physical mail. There is no warning to the senders that their messages may be compromised.

The San Mateo County sheriff’s office was sued in federal court by attorneys who say that deputies used a new communications system to screen and survey confidential communications with their clients in jail, violating “The First Amendment rights of all attorneys.”
