California Supreme Court Historical Society announced the winners of the 2022 Writing Competition

“When I jumped on the Zoom call, and I saw the California Supreme Court Chief Justice along with several other esteemed members of the judicial world — It hit me. I knew it was a big deal, and In one way, it was a little intimidating, but in another way, it was just really gratifying to be able to share the evolution of our projects with them,” contestant Ryan Carter said.

During a virtual Zoom meeting on Aug. 10, the California Supreme Court Historical Society congratulated the winners of its 2022 Selma Moidel Smith Student Writing Competition.

All three papers will appear in “California Legal History” this year.

First place was awarded to Leah Haberman of Columbia Law School for her paper, “More Than Moratoriums: The Obstacles to Abolishing California’s Death Penalty.” Ultimatel...
