Focus on fast food workers has long history — and may have dramatic future

On Labor Day, Gov. Gavin Newsom signed AB 257. a law that will create a Fast Food Council, under the umbrella of the Department of Industrial Relations, charged with creating labor standards for the industry.

A decade ago, the fast food industry was hit by a wave of strikes and unionization drives. Those efforts helped raise state and local minimum wages across the nation and contributed to a new wave of labor activism.
