Civil suits, DOJ appeal await in Conception boat fire case

“We will seek approval from the Justice Department to pursue an appeal of the order,” stated Thom Mrozek, spokesman for the U.S. attorney’s office in Los Angeles, after a federal judge dismissed manslaughter charges against the boat captain.

Although a judge dropped manslaughter charges against the captain of the Conception, a boat where 34 people died in a 2019 fire, the U.S. attorney’s office wants to appeal, indictments against other surviving crew members are still possible, and civil lawsuits against the crew, boat owners, Coast Guard and others are pending.
