Changes to judge’s retirement system awaits Newsom’s signature

AB 2443 would allow a judge enrolled in the Judges Retirement System II who is 60 or older with at least 15 years of service to retire immediately and defer benefits until they are 65.

California lawmakers quietly passed a significant change to the state’s judicial retirement system in the closing days of the legislative session.

Had it been law in 2017, AB 2443 could have allowed 3rd District Court of Appeal Justice William J. Murray Jr. to retire early without a financial penalty. But it will have no effect on Chief Justice Tani G. Cantil-Sakauye, who announced in July she will not seek another term.
