Old platforms contributed to pipeline spill, environmental group says

The platform owner, Amplify Energy Corp., and the U.S. Coast Guard have blamed the spill on ships that allegedly tore the ocean-floor pipeline that runs from the platform to the coast. The Center for Biological Diversity alleges that the government has allowed Platform Elly, which was connected to the pipeline, and other rigs in the Beta oilfield to continue operations based on outdated drilling plans.

The U.S. Bureau of Ocean Energy Management’s failure to review decades-old plans for offshore oil platforms was partially responsible for a spill off Huntington Beach that caused significant damage to wildlife and beaches, claims a lawsuit by an environmental group.
