Joseph Sullivan’s trial was watched by lawyers in the cyber and security industries because he is the first corporate executive to be prosecuted over data breaches and this case could change how security chiefs respond to such incidents.

A former chief of security at Uber Technologies Inc. was found guilty of hiding a 2016 data breach from federal regulators.

The jury deliberated 20 hours over four days before convicting Joseph Sullivan on Wednesday of obstruction of pending proceedings before a department or agency of the United States and misprision of a felony. He faces up to five years in prison.
