Fight between courts and stenographers over technology intensifies

54 county courts said in a joint statement there should be a “statutory framework” for “taking advantage of emerging technologies that would allow the court to provide this service remotely to multiple courtrooms.” The stenographers’ union said they need better pay to attract more people to the profession.

Courts in 54 of California’s 58 counties released a joint statement this week calling for a new “statutory framework for court reporting.”

The courts’ joint statement called on lawmakers to allow for “other options” when an in-person court reporter isn’t available.
