At NCAA trial, a scramble for witnesses, and role playing, ‘I’m not your monkey’
The jury was excused as the defense counsel and attorneys for plaintiff Alana Gee, the widow of former USC linebacker Matthew Gee, bickered into the lunch recess about taking defense witnesses out of order in the trial over allegations the NCAA should have done more to protect football players from brain injury.




Attorneys defending the NCAA in a wrongful death lawsuit on Thursday scrambled to find witnesses at the last minute in what the lead defense trial counsel labeled a “strategic” move.
“We didn’t know exactly when the plaintiffs were going to close and we made a decision not to call a live witness today,” said William F. Stute, head of the sports practice at Orrick Herrington & Sutcliffe LLP.
