US judge OKs discharge of more than $6B in student loans

In his order, Senior U.S. District Judge William Alsup in San Francisco considered whether the U.S. secretary of educationhad the authority to enter the settlement, ruling that he had not “exceeded his statutory authority or failed to follow the agency’s regulations” in doing so.

Student loan borrowers and U.S. Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona have obtained final approval for a settlement that will automatically discharge more than $6 billion of student loans and streamline remaining requests for discharge.
