US asserts privilege for HUD official in LA building permits case

The debate stems from a suit brought in 2011 against the city by the United States on behalf of the Fair Housing Council of San Fernando Valley and housing advocate Mei Ling. The suit alleged that over a six-year period, the city falsely certified that it was in compliance with the federal Rehabilitation Act — along with other laws meant to increase accessible housing — in order to secure federal funds.

The United States will continue to assert privilege over the deposition of a former Department of Housing and Urban Development official in a long-running case accusing the city of Los Angeles of making false claims in order to obtain building permits from the agency, according to a document filed by the federal government.
