“I would plan vacations months ahead of time because I just didn’t believe in continuing either motion or trial because I wanted to go skiing,” said retired Los Angeles County Judge Mark V. Mooney, who now can take personal time freely between handling arbitrations and mediations.

When Judge Mark V. Mooney announced his retirement from the Los Angeles County Superior Court this year, he knew he wanted to stay involved with the law in some capacity. Whether that would be through sitting on assignment or alternative dispute resolution, he wasn’t initially sure.

The 27-year judicial veteran said that, at first, sitting on assignment was a possibility — but not one that he was sure would be available to him for long.
