Avon must pay $50.3M for talc in woman’s cosmetics

Following nearly a week of deliberation, the jury handed down a verdict placing the plaintiffs’ actual damages at nearly $41 million. Punitive damages brought the total up.

A jury ordered Avon Products Inc. to pay $50.3 million to a woman who said that talc in their products caused her to develop mesothelioma.

Rita-Ann Chapman was awarded $40 million in actual damages last Wednesday, followed by another $10.3 million verdict awarding punitive damages on Friday. In addition, Hyster-Yale Group Inc. was assessed $1 million in punitive damages.
