Southern California air regulator sued over refinery exemptions
The lawsuit alleges that the South Coast Air Quality Management District exempted refineries with a production capacity of under 40,000 barrels per day from air monitoring requirements, a violation of a 2017 state mandate which required all petroleum refineries in California to install and operate air pollution monitors at their fence lines and sensitive locations such as day care centers, hospitals and schools.




Earthjustice sued Southern California’s air regulator on Monday, accusing it of giving the region’s oil refineries unlawful exemptions to state laws that protect nearby communities.
