A surprise choice in the next chair of Assembly Judiciary Committee

Assemblyman Brian Maienschein, D-San Diego, switched his party affiliation to Democrat after winning his first two terms as a Republican. Several other Assemblymembers with longer potential tenures under California’s term limits law had been lobbying for the job.

Assembly Speaker Anthony Rendon, D-Lakewood, has named Assemblyman Brian Maienschein, D-San Diego, as the new chair of the powerful Assembly Judiciary Committee. Assemblyman Bill Essayli, R-Corona, will serve as vice chair. The news came as Rendon announced chairs and vice chairs for all Assembly committees on Thursday.
