New national bar exam for 2026 to focus on skills, test fewer subjects

The California State Bar’s analysis of what’s needed for a new exam aligns with the National Council of Bar Examiners’ assessment, but the state agency is developing its own new test.

The National Council of Bar Examiners will release a Next-Gen Uniform Bar Exam in 2026, which will test fewer subjects and focus more on skill-based questions aimed at measuring actual ability to be a lawyer.
