$1B case against parking lot cameras tossed, sanctions sought
U.S. District Judge Stephen V. Wilson stated in his 22-page order granting full summary judgment that Park Assist, which provides parking camera reader systems, is not an “operator” subject to California’s Automated License Plate Readers statute. Even if it were, the statute requires a showing of actual harm and plaintiffs could not sufficiently demonstrate their theory of harm caused by the defendants reading the publicly available license plates.




After a $1 billion putative class action against parking management systems and Southern California shopping centers was dismissed in federal court this month, attorneys for the defendants have requested hundreds of thousands of dollars in costs and fees from the plaintiffs.
