Shipping firms can depose oil executive about spill

Amplify Engergy’s counsel had argued that the deposition of the company’s directors should be precluded under the apex doctrine as not advancing the case.

An executive with Amplify Energy Corp. must sit for a deposition by attorneys for shipping companies defending a class action related to a 2021 oil spill off the Southern California coast, a panel of special masters ordered.

The panel also stated in the court filings Tuesday that the deposition shall not exceed three hours and that the shipping companies can choose which of Amplify’s directors — Christopher Hamm, Randal Klein, or Todd Sny...
