State lawmakers act to fund more judicial security

The $1.4 million for appellate court security came in response to the Dec. 27 request from the Judicial Council. The move is an acknowledgment that judges increasingly are under threat.

On Monday, a U.S. federal court sentenced a Sacramento man to 40 months in prison for assaulting a federal court security officer in 2019. The next day, a few blocks away, Gov. Gavin Newsom introduced a state budget that included additional money for appellate court security. Also, that day, state lawmakers introduced a pair of budget bills requesting millions of dollars in extra spending on courthouse security in California.
