Jury awards heart valve maker $106.5M, appeal promised

Medtronic CoreValve contends that the invention that is claimed in the ’ patent was not new or was obvious and is therefore invalid. The jury unanimously voted that Medtronic actively induced infringement of heart valves patented by Colibri.

A cardiac valve manufacturer won a $106.5 million jury verdict against its competitor for patent infringement after a weeklong trial in federal court in Santa Ana.

The defendant, Medtronic, represented by Kathryn B. Riley and Mark D. Fowler at DLA Piper, has not admitted any liability and intends to appeal the verdict.
