Report shows small declines in patent filings in California

The biggest drop -- 20% -- was in the Western District of Texas where a local rule was changed to stop one judge from bogarting cases.

A Texas federal judge’s role as the go-to jurist for patent infringement cases is waning, according to a report released Wednesday that attorneys say underestimates the impact of a rules change.

U.S. District Judge Alan D. Albright of the Western District of Texas handles the largest patent calendar in the nation, with 678 cases – or 20% of all cases nationwide – filed there between 2020 and 2022, according to the report by Lex Machina.
