Diocese accused of hiding assets from sex abuse claimants
“The complaint alleges that the Roman Catholic Bishop of San Diego … fraudulently transferred 291 properties, having an assessed value of about $435 million, to 93 parish real estate holding corporations that the diocese established in 2018,” said lead attorney for the plaintiffs Irwin M. Zalkin of San Diego.




The Roman Catholic Diocese of San Diego concealed $435 million in real estate holdings in parishes throughout the county to avoid paying out settlements in sexual assault cases, a newly filed lawsuit alleges.
The complaint filed Tuesday by the Zalkin Law Firm claims that the diocese concealed the funds as a 2019 state bill, AB 218, opened the doors for a flood of legal actions against the church.
