‘Sting’ screenwriter’s Oscar can’t be used to discharge debt

The unanimous decision by the 2nd District Court of Appeal panel solidified a long-standing rule the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has against reselling its statuettes.

An Academy Award statuette cannot be seized as payment for a debt, an appellate court panel ruled, pointing to a binding agreement that prize winners enter into governing the sale or transfer of the award.

Benjamin G. Ramm, who represented a plaintiff-creditor trying to take the Oscar to defray a debt, said the appellate decision could have unintended consequences.
