Bar board proposes deficit budget with no license fee hike
“This is an austerity budget,” board member Mark W. Toney said. “Any budget that is level in terms of revenue and spending, which this basically is, in the face of 5% to 10% salary increases, represents a cut. I believe it threatens the ability of the State Bar to fulfill its core mission.”





The State Bar Board of Trustees submitted a 2023 budget proposal of $286.5 million to the Legislature on Tuesday, 5% more than last year’s budget. The proposal anticipates an overall $16.6 million deficit, with salary increases of 10% and more, but no increase in attorneys’ licensing fees.
Anticipated savings on expenses are $2 million over last year, or about .08%, the proposal states.
