Lawmakers discuss details of remote court proceedings

In January, the Judicial Council updated the Legislature in a pair of reports drawn from survey responses from 38 counties.

Lawmakers are inching their way towards a new model for remote proceedings that relies on a few basic principles — the most important of which is that it be optional and driven by litigants’ own choices. Other general guidelines call for more use of remote proceedings for more minor cases, criminal arraignments, family and juvenile, but few to none in jury trials, especially ones involving felonies.
