Stand-in for ill defense lawyer gets judicial upbraiding

Harland W. Braun was hospitalized with an undisclosed illness during the corruption prosecution of former Los Angeles deputy mayor Raymond Chan. His co-counsel, an inexperienced associate, said he was unqualified to continue the case.

A federal judge heard a motion Thursday for a mistrial in the bribery and extortion case against former Los Angeles deputy mayor Raymond Chan, chastising the defense team for what he called a blatant disregard for the court’s orders.
