Few agree on bill for remote criminal hearings till 2026
The California Public Defenders’ Association has thrown its support behind the bill after its author made several changes they had sought. But Judge Lisa Rodriguez of the San Diego County Superior Court told the Assembly Public Safety Committee the Judicial Council preferred the old version.




Nearly everyone with a stake in the court system says the state should enact rules for allowing remote hearings in criminal cases. Trouble is, they can’t agree on what those rules should say.
Take AB 1214. By a 5-0 vote on Tuesday, the Assembly Public Safety Committee passed the bill to allow courts to hold remote criminal hearings until 2026; the current rules would expire in January.
