Judge fines church $1.2M for not enforcing COVID rules
“It should appear clear to all — regardless of religious affiliation — that wearing a mask while worshiping one’s god and communing with other congregants is a simple, unobtrusive, giving way to protect others while exercising your right to religious freedom,” Santa Clara County Judge Evette D. Pennypacker wrote.




A judge imposed a $1.2 million fine on the Calvary Chapel San Jose congregation that declined to enforce mask wearing or social distancing orders of the Santa Clara County public health officer after a three-year battle that now moves back to state appellate and possibly federal court.
