Greenpeace faces defamation claim over meaning of ‘endangered forest’

Greenpeace argues that the area in Quebec known as the Montagnes Blanches does not have a clear, consistent definition of what its borders are and the group’s free speech rights allow it to call the area where logging occurred “endangered forest.”

Greenpeace International asked a federal judge Thursday to dismiss a defamation lawsuit against it, asserting that when it stated wood products company Resolute Forest Products Inc. was operating in an endangered forest area it was properly exercising its First Amendment rights to free speech.
