Trial tests whether insurance agents are employees

The defendant, Farmers Group Insurance, said it could not have been an employer because the plaintiffs operated their insurance agencies as separate businesses.

Four former Farmers Group Insurance agents suing the company for age discrimination will rest their case Monday in a jury trial that centers on whether they are employees or independent contractors.

There are 79 other plaintiffs who sued Farmers on the same grounds but these four plaintiffs were identified to be combined into one coordinated proceeding.

The defense will begin to present its case Tuesday morning....
