Suit against Girardi attorney stayed pending prosecution

Judge Richard L. Fruin granted the stay as David Lira, Girardi’s son-in-law and business partner and the last remaining defendant in the case, faces criminal charges in federal court in Illinois. Both the civil case in Los Angeles and the criminal case in Illinois stem from allegations that Lira mismanaged client trust account funds at Girardi’s former law firm, Girardi Keese.

A Superior Court judge granted a stay of proceedings in a lawsuit against disbarred attorney Thomas V. Girardi and his associates, which was brought by attorneys seeking their share of fees from long-past Girardi Keese cases.

The stay, which plaintiffs’ and defendants’ counsel fought over until the last minute, will mean the plaintiffs, including one who is 82, will need to wait until at least October for the case to resume.
