Jury awards $10M to family of Lake Elsinore man fatally shot by deputy sheriff

The lawsuit contended that Riverside County Sheriff’s Sergeant Dan Ponder used excessive force to violate Najera-Aguirre’s Fourth Amendment right when he shot him six times without warning.

A federal jury unanimously awarded $10 million Wednesday to the family of a 36-year-old Lake Elsinore man fatally shot in the back by a Riverside County deputy sheriff in 2016.

“I think the jury’s verdict speaks to the value of human life and the need for accountability when officers use excessive deadly force. I am particularly happy for the three children of Mr. Najera,” plaintiffs’ attorney Dale K. Galipo said.
