Fallout from ruling on AR-15s could free prisoners

Last week, California’s 3rd District Court of Appeal upheld a prisoner’s conviction for using an AR-15 in the commission of a crime. The April 28 ruling matches at least two other state appellate opinions and could lead to retroactive dismissal of convictions.

Could a conservative federal judge inadvertently free dozens of violent felons earlier from California prisons? Differing opinions about a state ban on so-called “assault weapons” have raised that ironic possibility.
