Law student sues to get degree to earn money to repay school

James Camper III argued he will have difficulty repaying his debt if he can’t take the bar exam. According to his petition, he has enough credits to graduate from Monterey College of Law, but doesn’t have the $24,599.34 he owes the school.

The California Supreme Court has rejected an appeal from a former law student who said he is being denied his diploma and the right to take the bar exam because he has not paid $24,599.34 in tuition and fees.

The dispute is a variation on a more common tale: students who went deeply into debt but never passed the bar. Aspiring attorneys have also been denied bar admission because of “character and fitness issues” related to student debt. In...
