Oakland diocese announces bankruptcy filing because of sex abuse claims
In March, Bishop Michael C. Barber warned he might have to seek bankruptcy protection because of 330 sexual abuse lawsuits filed under a recent California law. AB 218, which Gov. Gavin Newsom signed in 2019, created a three-year window for civil plaintiffs to file fresh cases outside the normal statute of limitations. Some of the cases allege abuses up to 60 years ago.




The Roman Catholic Diocese of Oakland announced Monday it was filing for Chapter 11 protection. It is the second Catholic Diocese in the state to seek bankruptcy this year, and may not be the last.
