Lawsuits pile up against retail websites over chat box recordings
Plaintiffs accuse the companies of paying independent third-party companies to embed code in their websites, allowing those third parties to monitor, eavesdrop and harvest data from chat box discussions, which they then monetize.




Nearly a dozen e-commerce companies, including Neiman Marcus and HarperCollins, were sued in Los Angeles County Superior Court this week over allegations that they violated the California Invasion of Privacy Act by recording and transmitting website visitor communications without disclosure or authorization.
