San Diego diocese says it will seek Chapter 11 protection

“The ultimate timing may move, but the decision has been made,” confirmed diocese spokesman Kevin Eckery on Monday.

The Roman Catholic Diocese of San Diego disclosed in court that it will file for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection — but not until November.

Such a long lead time is unusual, but not unheard of, in bankruptcy cases. The dioceses of Santa Rosa and Oakland disclosed weeks or months ahead of time they would file for Chapter 11 protection this year, said Devin M. Storey, a partner with the Zalkin Law Firm PC in San Diego.
