9th Circuit nominee questioned on criminal law decisions

Senate Republicans portrayed U.S. District Judge Ana I. de Alba as soft on crime, citing a sentencing decision in a child pornography case that was less than what prosecutors sought, and an order removing one of a man’s GPS monitoring devices. He was convicted of aiding his brother, who killed a police officer.

Republicans on the Senate Judiciary Committee peppered U.S. District Judge Ana I. de Alba — nominated by President Joe Biden for a vacancy on the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals — with questions Wednesday about recent criminal case rulings and her understanding of the commerce clause.
