Colorado River deal ends litigation threat – for the moment

“The caveat is that the states and the bureau has kicked the can down the road for a while, until the end of 2026, which is going to be here before we all know it,” UC Davis School of Law Professor Richard M. Frank said.

Gov. Gavin Newsom announced a deal on Monday with the governors of Arizona and Nevada to reduce their usage of the Colorado River by 3 million acre feet over the next three years. The agreement could avert years of litigation between California and two desert states that faced grim prospects under the status quo. But it will only buy time as the parties seek a longer term deal.
