State Bar leader floats expanding agency's discipline authority to law firms
Under state law, the bar is only authorized to discipline individual attorneys. "We do not have discipline authority over law firms. Neither does any other regulatory agency in the state," State Bar Board Chair Ruben Duran Duran said.




State Bar board Chair Ruben Duran suggested that the agency might seek authority to investigate and perhaps discipline law firms, following allegations of financial mismanagement by a former chief operating officer of Lewis Brisbois Bisgaard & Smith LLP.
Duran raised the issue Monday as he condemned two former Lewis Brisbois attorneys, John Barber and Jeffrey Ranen, for emails that showed them making offensive comments about women and minorities.
